The Constitution grants Congress the authority to raise and spend money for the general welfare. The Tea Party’s claim, never challenged by so-called pundits on TV, that all spending except on defense and a few other items is “unconstitutional” is totally demolished.

You read that right….welcome to another chapter [...]
Throughout the depths of the recession, there was much to be said about the disproportionate effect on men’s employment. Women, typically lower paid, and in fields not as hard hit as male-dominated fields like manufacturing and construction, were doing pretty well in comparison. (If ”doing pretty well” is defined as simply having a job.)
Ah, [...]
Twitter is ablaze with outrage over a tweet by Megyn Kelly the host of Fox’s “America Live.” Kelly wonders whether a woman who was beaten into a coma by a man in a dispute over a parking space “deserves it.”
Here is a news snippet about the assault:
Oscar Fuller was [...]
The threat of the dirty bomb is overshadowed by that of terrorists acquiring a nuclear weapons. A dirty bomb bears no resemblance whatsoever to a sex bomb.
I’m writing a series of posts as a blogging fellow for the Strengthen Social Security Campaign, a coalition of more than 270 national and state organizations.
FactCheck.org gets it wrong on Social Security:
Here’s what they say:
Some senior Democrats are claiming that Social Security does not contribute “one penny” [...]
I’ve been blogging on Daily Kos since Fall of 2006. In that time, I’ve mostly blogged about what I call “fluff” – pooties, soups, community because to me community is the backbone of the Progressive Agenda.
In my 4.5 years there I’ve seen a lot of good, and some not so good. I’ve seen Kossacks [...]
This radio interview with Joe Brewer, Founder of Cognitive Policy Works, explores the core challenges facing the progressive movement in the United States. Joe explains why progressives have been unable to set the political agenda in recent decades and offers insights into how to successfully frame the debate. He also describes how to [...]
After all, Pfc. Manning has already harmed himself with his irony. In fact, Manning may have something to teach the army — and the rest of us.
Return with me if you will to the heady days of the early Clinton Presidency when then-First Lady Hillary declared that “it takes a village to raise a child.” Her bold exhortation at that time committed the leadership of the Democratic party to the belief that there are societal responsibilities owed to every [...]
The Republican Party today announced a comprehensive plan to address global warming. As the Party never believed global warming exists, it came as a surprise even to themselves.
“Unlike Democrat tax and regulate plans, this is simple, comprehensive, and handles the problem immediately, once and for all”, said House Speaker, John Boehner, a-glowing. “Instead of [...]
I suppose, as a general rule, the human animal is built to prefer knowing to not knowing, but I have been struck over the course of the past decade or so at how much worse our society has gotten at tolerating uncertainty. It’s as if having to say “I don’t know” triggers some [...]
Tunisian students are energized by the prospect of participating in the government. Meanwhile, complacency about democracy doesn’t become Americans.
Screwing the middle class has become a Republican badge of honor. Republicans are tripping over themselves trying to find more creative ways to do it. The low-hanging fruit of suppressing their wages, shipping their jobs overseas, destroying their net worth, cheerleading them into crippling debt, and busting their private sector unions is done. The attack [...]
Because there are Democrats like this. Here is video of Rep. George Miller talking about workers and the right to organize.
SOME Democrats are bad Democrats, others are GREAT!
While we’ve seen unprecedented attention on workers’ struggles in Wisconsin, Ohio and other state capitols, the GOP is pushing a bill through Congress that would make organizing transportation workers all-but-impossible. It was sponsored by House Transportation Chairman John Mica (R-Fla.) who, as you might expect, is “a major recipient of campaign contributions from the airline [...]
It’s a tough job to portray pro-union demonstrators as “thugs” when the local police department is busy issuing press releases thanking them for conducting themselves “ with great decorum and civility.”
But the Right has never been known to let reality get in the way of a good story, and the intellectual gymnastics they’re performing [...]
Here’s the thing we all know: Right-wing Republicans don’t usually win if they’re honest about what they want to do. So in order to be successful, they have to lie, coerce, threaten, manipulate and cheat their way to victory. They can’t lead on the basis of their policies, because so few people [...]
Not that the truth has much to do with anything these days, but E.J. Dionne nails it: It’s a lot easier to keep cutting than it is to come up with real solutions. Of course, the current austerity trend has much more to do with the long-term political interests of the [...]
The Times’s Broad and Sanger, along with ISIS’s Albright, stoke the fires of Iran alarmism anew. Like “wipe Israel off the map,” “another Chernobyl” is pushing buttons for an attack on Iran.
