While the hoax went down yesterday I still think Lee Camp’s Moment of Clarity is great and pertinent. Posted this yesterday on my own site.
My partner and I are getting set to mail in our taxes before the deadline approaches. We owe this year due to contract work I had earlier in [...]
The Republican budget is SO loony it’s even scaring the right-wing nuts! How often does THAT happen?
The Republicans are voting on their budget plan this week. The plan eliminates Medicare and guts Medicaid, guts the rest of the government (except the things their oil company and military-contractor sponsors [...]

Sorry…no soup…no pooties…not in this diary…not today… not with so much on the line this week. I’m going to attempt to be serious here and I hope you’ll agree with me on the bottom line: if we truly want the Congressional Progressive Caucus to stand up for [...]
Did Koch Industries write the budget deal? Or is it just a coincidence that so many of the the things Republicans demanded — and got — just happen to line up with the financial interests of the billionaires who fund the Tea Party and much of the “conservative movement?” Cutting money for the EPA, alternative [...]
Some time ago I came across this on the internet:
The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent terrorist threats and have therefore raised their security level from “Miffed” to “Peeved.” Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to “Irritated” or even “A Bit Cross.” The English have not been “A [...]
Libya begs the question of how something as benign sounding as humanitarian intervention got such a bad rap.
Were he alive today, Al Capone would probably be a member in good standing of the US House of Representatives, representing the Great State of Illinois. We’ve all read about Capone, of course, and we know that back in the day thugs and gangsters fought the law. And the law won.
[...]
We are geeks, and we are proud to be.
We are rational; we understand cause and effect; we understand consequences; we understand loosely-coupled distributed self-organizing systems with multiple redundant communication channels.
We are a community, not individuals entirely subject to our employers’ whims. Our personal contacts make up the backbone of the world-wide GeekWeb.

How do you get a major bank like JPMorgan Chase to listen? What do the thousands of New York homeowners, the majority of whom are African American and Latino, who have been pleading for mortgage modifications to avoid foreclosure, do to get them to pay attention?
Wednesday, The Mayor and Board of Trustees of the [...]
I spent this past weekend at the southeastern regional training for trainers (t4t) of PowerShift 2011. This event was packed with Dirty Hippies and DFH Ideas. A good time was had by all, and the earth will be better for this collective having gathered in Atlanta.
From PowerShift2011.org:
This spring, over [...]
Progressive Caucus co-chairman Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., and other members of the Progressive Caucus react to Rep. Paul Ryan’s budget proposal.
Here we are only four months into Republican control of the House of Representatives and the government is shutting down! When you give power to people who hate the government, what [...]
I think we’d all love to live every phase of our lives in happy accord with high moral and ethical principles. We’d love it if we were never confronted by logical contradictions and cognitive dissonance, by cases where our walk was at odds with our talk. But the truth is that we live [...]
A bit more on that story about the horrific killings in Afghanistan which followed lunatic Pastor Terry Jones’ Qu’ran-burning stunt.
I wrote this a while back:
Those reactionaries within our own society who are pushing the Clash of Civilizations are mirror-images of the terrorists that inspire their hyperbolic fear; they’re just as [...]
From Campaign for America’s Future:
Help Fight Cantor’s Quest to Eliminate Social Security
Last week, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor said out loud what he really thinks: He believes Social Security “cannot exist.” At all. For anyone.
This week NPR played [...]
What did people expect would happen when they voted for Reagan, Bush and other conservatives, or supported their policies? In the Holland (Michigan) Sentinel community columnist Ray Buursma writes, American workers got what they deserved. Some of the things he says might resonate with many of us,
Remember the Reagan standard? Are you [...]
After the unveiling of Life Always’ ad at 58th and State St. on Chicago’s south side Rev. Stephen Broden, a board member of the organization, and other speakers responded to questions.
The total cost of the thirty ads was not revealed but the spokesperson of the organization is supposed to be gathering [...]
Yesterday, news broke that President Obama had signed a secret order – called a ‘finding‘ – which authorised the covert support of the United States government for the Libyan rebel forces.
Basically, a finding is one of the principal forms by which the president authorises secret operations by the Central Intelligence Agency.
As an Iraq [...]
Education is not listed among the enumerated powers of Article I Section 8 of the Constitution. Yet the national governments of the United States have maintained an interest in education going back to the Congress under the Articles of Confederation, which in the Land Ordinance of 1785 established that the 16th of the 36 square [...]
This past Friday, my article “Meet the New Soviets: Gingrich, Walker, Breitbart”, was yanked from the Huffington Post after being up for 8 hours. My article is still not up, but you can read it here.) The reasons it was pulled are troubling to me and should be a concern to anyone who wonders about the future editorial directions of Huffington Post.
I don’t know if this is internal chaos, new editorial overlords at AOL or a quid pro quo to appease Breitbart. What ever the reason, I hope that my experience will be seen as an opportunity to clarify editorial standards at the Huffington Post and make a clear distinction between evidence based opinions about the direction of our own society and the human wrecking-ball tactics of Andrew Breitbart.
