Any one who has ever worked as a correctional officer in any prison or jail knows that any and all threats indicating suicides are taken very seriously, failure to take preventive measures can cost an officer his job. You are mistaken thinking that the elastic waistband in undershots could not be used for a noose, convicts have used every conceivable objects and materials to outsmart guards and as in this case, any and all clothging items would be removed.

I hope Manning gets enough outside information to know that he is forcing conversations all over this country. I spent time absorbing the apartheid museum in Jo-burg last spring, including the extraordinary history of Mandela’s incarcerations. What extraordinary strength of character it must take.

Good point. I’m sure Fruit of the Loom will come out with a new, “safe for detainee” line of underwear.
